NCCP Instruction Beginner - CanSkate

(former Level 1 Phase 1 training)

Entry Pre-Requisites:

  1. Completed all three Preliminary STARSkate tests;
  2. Completed one Jr. Bronze STARSkate test; and
  3. Be at least 16 years of age

Requirements for CanSkate coach trained status:

  1. Attend the three day CanSkate course; that now includes Introduction to Competition Part A: Make Ethical Decisions and Planning a Practice modules;
  2. Complete the CanSkate assignment successfully; and
  3. Hold a valid first aid certificate (every three years) (coach registration requirement)

Once a coach has achieved the CanSkate trained status within the NCCP Instruction-Beginner context and has registered as a CanSkate coach for two consecutive years, they are now required to become CanSkate coach certified – effective September 1, 2009.

Requirements for CanSkate coach evaluated and certified status:

  1. Complete the CanSkate Coach Mentorship Program:
    • Observe three CanSkate sessions with a mentor coach
    • Complete the observation diary pages
    • Develop a CanSkate group lesson plan and relevant Emergency Action Plan (EAP)
    • Teach the group lesson plan in front of your mentor coach
    • Outline a CanSkate session on paper: create a 45 or 60 minute CanSkate session detailing information on the four main parts – warm-up, group lesson, group activities and cool-down
  1. Complete the Make Ethical Decisions (MED) on-line evaluation module:
    • Following the training of this module at the CanSkate course, coaches must log on to www.coach.ca and take the on-line evaluation of this module to receive credit for the NCCP outcome – Make Ethical Decision.

Coach Status:

  • CanSkate coach trained (course and assignment)
  • CanSkate coach evaluated (trained status + mentorship program)
  • CanSkate coach certified (evaluated status + MED on-line module

Please note: A trained or certified CanSkate coach is qualified to teach only CanSkate skills on a club’s CanSkate session.

CAC Transition Status: Skate Canada has received full approval of this program.

NCCP Instruction Beginner – CanPowerSkate (CPS)

Entry Pre-Requisites:

  1. Must be at least 16 years of age
  2. Figure skating background: must have achieved the CanSkate Coach status or higher

OR

Equivalent Hockey/ringette requirements

Training Requirements:

  1. 2-day CanPowerSkate course successfully
  2. Introduction to competition Part A multi-sport modules successfully
  3. Hold a valid First Aid certificate (every three years)

Evaluation Requirements for “CanPowerSkate Coach” Status:

  1. CPS coach’s exam
  2. On-ice practice teaching lesson
  3. Emergency Action Plan (EAP) if not already completed successfully in the CanSkate assignment
  4. Making ethical decisions on-line evaluation available on CAC’s website.

Coach Title: CanPowerSkate Coach (trained)

NCCP Instruction Intermediate - Primary STARSkate

(former Level 1 Phases 2, 3 and 4)

Entry Pre-Requisites:

  1. Must be CanSkate coach trained or certified
  2. Completed all three Junior Bronze STARSkate tests

Requirements for Primary STARSkate coach trained status:

  1. Complete the Primary STARSkate Coach Home Study
  2. Attend a three day figure skating course (Primary STARSkate)
  3. Teach one 15 minute lesson in front of a mentor coach (at the three day course)
  4. Complete three daily assignments (at the three day course)
  5. Hold a valid first aid certificate (every three years) (coach registration requirement)

Requirements for Primary STARSkate coach evaluated and certified status:

Prerequisite: must be registered as a Skate Canada professional coach

  1. Complete 50 hours of practice coaching (minimum of 40 hours on-ice) in Skate Canada member clubs following the completion of the three day course.
  1. Submit three different 15 minute video lessons at the primary (preliminary or junior bronze) STARSkate level. 
    • One 15 minute mandatory stroking or skating skills lesson and;
    • Two additional 15 minute lessons based on the following selections: jump, spin, interpretive skating, ice dance, synchronized skating, pairs.
  1. Complete the Make Ethical Decision (MED) on-line module at www.coach.ca

Coach Titles:

  • Primary STARSkate coach trained (home study + three day course)
  • Primary STARSkate coach evaluated (trained status + 50 hours and video submission)
  • Primary STARSkate coach certified (evaluated status + MED on-line module)

NCCP Instruction Intermediate - Intermediate STARSkate

(former Level 2 program)

Entry Pre-Requisites:

  1. Coaches must be Primary STARSkate coach trained or certified

Requirements for Intermediate STARSkate/provincial coach (ISPC) trained:

  1. Complete the ISPC home study guide
  2. Attend the ISPC sport science course and complete the required workbook
  3. Attend the ISPC stroking & skating skills course and complete the required workbook
  4. Attend the ISPC singles course and complete the required workbook
  5. Attend the ISPC dance course and complete the required workbook
  6. Attend the ISPC pairs & synchronized skating course and complete the required workbooks

Requirements for Intermediate STARSkate coach evaluated and certified:

Prerequisite: must have an ISPC trained status

  1. Video lessons:
    • Submit one technical video lesson with a lesson plan at the senior bronze or junior silver STARSkate level and;
    • Submit one stroking or skating skills video lesson with a lesson plan at the senior bronze or junior silver STARSkate level.
  2. Video analysis and music CD:
    • Submit a video analysis and music CD of a skater whose program you have designed or choreographed at the senior bronze or junior silver STARSkate level
  3. Have skaters pass intermediate STARSkate tests OR complete the mentorship program.
  4. Must complete the Make Ethical Decision (MED) on-line evaluation at www.coach.ca

Coach Titles:

  • ISPC Trained (home study + five courses and workbooks)
  • Intermediate STARSkate coach evaluated (trained status + two video lessons, a video analysis and tests passed or mentorship program)
  • Intermediate STARSkate coach certified (evaluated status + MED)

NCCP Instruction Advanced (Level 3) Coach

Entry: Competition-Introduction/Instruction-Intermediate trained coach

Core Training Requirements:

  1. Complete a Level 3 theory course or effective April 1, 2009 coaches must complete 4 of 6 new NCCP Competition-
    Development multi-sport modules in place of the former Level 3 theory.
    Pre-requisite: Level 1 & Level 2 theory or Make Ethical Decisions (training or evaluation) and Design a Basic
    Sport Program.
    4 of 6 of the following NCCP Competition-Development multi-sport modules:
    • Developing Athletic Abilities
    • Prevention and Recovery
    • Coaching and Leading Effectively
    • Psychology of Performance
    • Managing Conflict
    • Doping Prevention
  2. Complete a Level 3 general subjects course
  3. Complete a Level 3 technical course (Singles, Pairs, Dance, or Synchronized Skating)

Evaluation Requirements:

  1. Successful completion of a workbook assignment
  2. Successful completion of yearly plan

Certification Requirements:

  1. Completion of a Coach Portfolio (practical coaching record of a Senior Silver/Gold STARSkate level athlete
  2. Program analysis of the performance (on video/DVD) of a coach’s athlete/team’s free program (error detection/correction)
  3. Teaching Component on-ice: completion of two lessons (technical skill and stroking/skating skills lesson) at the Senior Silver/Gold level (level of skill, communication of information, ability to detect and correct errors)
  4. Interview covering all components covered in the training requirements listed above
