From September 14-16, 30 athletes, eight coaches and 24 support staff were at Vancouver’s Pacific Coliseum for a monitoring training camp in preparation for the upcoming competitive season. Technical specialists and judges were on hand to work with the athletes and to provide feedback on the technical elements and presentation of their programs. The athletes welcomed the opportunity to skate at the Pacific Coliseum which will be the venue for skating at the 2010 Olympic Games. Click here to see pictures of athletes performing their programs.
There were a number of off-ice activities included in the three-day session including media training sessions and local appearances at the Vancouver skating club and at the Y.
Thursday, September 14 – media training sessions:
The pair skaters and the women attended the first media training session Thursday morning. The session was led by Debbi Wilkes, Olympic silver medalist in pairs (1964) and Skate Canada Director of Marketing and Sponsorship, Tracy Wilson, Olympic bronze medalist in dance (1988) and CTV commentator and reporter Vic Rauter of TSN. The second session was attended by the dance couples and the men. Skaters were taught how to deal with media questions and how to prepare for interviews. In the evening coaches attended a session with Debbi Wilkes and Tracy Wilson. Skaters were able to put what they learned into practice on Friday as reporters interviewed them when they came off the ice after they finished their programs.
Friday, September 15 – visit of Vancouver skating club
The pairs went to the Vancouver skating club to meet and skate with the members of the club.
Friday, September 15 & Saturday, September 16 – autograph sessions
Autograph sessions were organized at the Y. The dance teams were able to meet their fans on Friday, and it was the men’s turn on Saturday. Close to 25 children were present at each session and BMO the Bear was a main attraction on Saturday.
The ladies did an autograph session at the rink on Saturday.
Saturday, September 16 – boat cruise
The fall monitoring camp ended with a boat cruise for athletes on the Harbour Princess offered by Bank of Montreal.
