A total of 131 coaches from across Canada attended the National Coaches’ Conference held in conjunction with Skate Canada’s Annual Convention and General Meeting in Regina, Sask May 28-30. The three-day conference featured high profile coaches and speakers Doug Leigh, Lee Barkell with on-ice assistance from World Champion Jeffrey Buttle, Joanne McLeod, and choreographer Sandra Bezic.

The conference opened with keynote speaker Frank Dick who captured everyone’s attention with his motivating messages.  The Best of the Best CanSkate coaches were honoured in front of their peers for their important work at the grassroots level.  In addition, several important coach presentations were made including honouring Doug Leigh for reaching another milestone in his coaching career by becoming the first Skate Canada Coach to attain NCCP Level 5 certification. 

Another conference highlight was the Trade Show displaying the latest technology and relevant information on coaching products and services. These included  Dartfish (video analysis software), Balanced Edge (software to manage the Cumulative Points Calculation judging system), AWI Solutions (software to manage business administration’ Chianto - skating dress designs, True Sport, Coaching Association of Canada, BFL – Skate Canada’s coach insurance company, Sask Sport, and Gador Sports - Skate Canada’s exclusive coach clothing provider.

On and off-ice workshops were provided to coaches covering such topics as the business of coaching, flexibility training and updates on the CPC/ISU judging system. The 2008 National Coaches Conference concluded with a panel discussion Friday afternoon.  Moderated by Louis Stong, the panel included Manon Perron, Lee Barkell, Mike Slipchuk, Sandra Bezic and Dr. Patricia Chafe.
