(January 13, 2009) – Last season, Skate Canada’s President, Benoît Lavoie, challenged each club and school to increase their CanSkate membership. Last year was particularly special as CanSkate was about to celebrate its 25th anniversary in the 2008/2009 season. The President’s CanSkate Challenge was developed to encourage Canadians to join the nation’s only official learn-to-skate program. While all the clubs did a wonderful job with the challenge, the Prince of Wales Skating Club was the 2007/2008 top club winner from the Newfoundland/Labrador Section.
What is more exciting than winning Skate Canada’s President’s CanSkate Challenge? The Prince of Wales Skating Club enjoyed seeing all their new CanSkaters having fun on the ice, and were also awarded two all-event tickets to the 2009 BMO Canadian Figure Skating Championships, being held later this week in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. In December 2008, the club's executive decided to donate the tickets to the Saskatoon Chapter of the Children's Wish Foundation! We were pleased to learn that they will be able to make a child’s wish come true as the recipient loves skating! The Prince of Wales Skating Club is delighted to have the opportunity to make this special wish happen for this child. "We were able to pass these wonderful Skate Canada tickets to her and she is absolutely ecstatic about this. The smile on her face was a mile wide" said the club’s President, Christine Morgan.
What a great way to start the year for both the skating club and for this special child who will get to enjoy Canada’s premiere skaters as they compete for national titles. Congratulations to the Prince of Wales Skating Club on their President’s CanSkate Challenge win and on setting a great example of how to make a wish come true!
