Skate Canada volunteer honoured by the Province of Ontario

Mary Burden
Mary Burdon is a long-time member of the London Figure Skating Club.

Mary Burdon has been involved in skating for 60 years as a club volunteer, judge, data specialist, event organizer and hospitality planner. She is a hard worker who has donated numerous hours to her club and section. In late March, she was honoured by the Province of Ontario for her dedication over the years.

The 2008 Ontario Sport Awards were presented on March 26, 2009 at the Westin Bristol Place Hotel in Toronto and Mary was awarded the Syl Apps Special Achievement Award. The award is presented annually by the Province of Ontario to Ontario volunteers who have contributed to the development of sport in the province.

“Mary exemplifies the true spirit of volunteerism and dedication to provide quality service to fellow officials, athletes, coaches, parents and administrators with the intent of developing figure skating and skaters in the province of Ontario. Western Ontario Section is most proud to salute and honour Mary for her continued support, dedication and her worthy achievements,” said Pat Woods, Chair, Skate Canada Western Ontario Section.

The Ontario Sport Awards program is an excellent opportunity to recognize those individuals who have made a significant contribution to the growth and development of sport in the Province of Ontario.

Congratulations Mary!

The 20 person team includes: Allison Proudfoot, Amy Cebulak, Ashley Greenhalgh, Cara Horan, Cara Moir, Carla Coveart, Danyel Wright-Dykstra, Emily Penrose, Jennifer Beauchamp, Julia Horan, Kristen Loritz, Lauren Zbucki, Madeleine Wendland, Michele Moore, Morgan Harper, Nichole Manahan, Sheri Moir, Taryn Milne, Taylor Kemp and Tiffany Elliot.

Vanessa Crone and Paul Poirier

This is Vanessa and Paul's second year on the Skate Canada national team. They made the team last season after coming an outstanding fourth place at their first BMO Canadian Figure Skating Championships in 2008. The 2008-2009 season was a breakout one for the pair as they got comfortable at numerous senior events. They were assigned to two ISU Senior Grand Prix events, placing an impressive fourth at Trophée Eric Bompard and then landing on the podium at HomeSense Skate Canada International. The success didn't stop there as the couple won their first medal at the BMO Canadian Figure Skating Championships in senior, a silver. They made the trip to the venue of the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver for the ISU Four Continents Figure Skating Championships and placed fourth. This year they also secured a trip to Los Angeles for the ISU World Figure Skating Championships. This was their debut appearance at the event, as they represented the second entry for Canada in the ice dance discipline; they finished in 12th.

Vanessa and Paul are moving up the ice dance ranks at a rapid pace. We can no doubt expect great things from this teenage team.
