National awards presented at Skate Canada Annual Convention and General Meeting

(June 11, 2009 - OTTAWA, ON) – The Skate Canada Annual Convention and General Meeting (ACGM) was held in Edmonton, Alberta over the weekend with over 450 members of the Canadian skating community in attendance. The event ran from June 3-6 with main sessions at the Westin Edmonton Hotel. Included in the weekend was the announcement of Skate Canada national award winners.

The Skate Canada National Award Program honours dedicated members of the skating community who have donated their time to help contribute to improving the quality of skating in Canada.

The 2009 recipients are:

  • Kathy Sutherland - Cochrane Skating Club, Alberta/NWT/Nunavut Section
    2009 Skate Canada Club and Recreational Coach Award of Excellence presented by Artistry
  • Éric Therrien - Sport Études Pierefonds, Quebec Section
    2009 Skate Canada Competitive Coach Award of Excellence presented by Artistry
  • Margarette Wong - Port Dover Skating Club, Western Ontario Section
    2009 Skate Canada Officials Award of Excellence
  • Dolores Allin - Mt. Boucherie Skating Club, British Columbia/Yukon Section
    2009 Elizabeth Swan Memorial Award
  • Madison Lessard - Tweed and District Figure Skating Club, Eastern Ontario Section
    2009 BMO CanSkater of the Year
  • Ann Shaw - Leaside Skating Club Central Ontario Section
    2009 Billie Mitchell Award

Skate Canada also awards volunteer award to one member of each of the 13 Skate Canada sections. The following outstanding volunteers have been awarded the 2009 Skate Canada Volunteer Award of Excellence:

  • Sharon Dahl - Cheam Skating Club, British Columbia/Yukon Section
  • Bev Padget - Stony Plain Skating Club, Alberta/NWT/Nunavut Section
  • Enid Davidson - Hudson Bay SC, Saskatchewan Section
  • Tammy Dunbar - Oakville Skating Club, Manitoba Section
  • Lyn Mullins - Fort William Club, Northern Ontario Section 
  • Clare MacDonald - Point Edward Skating Club, Western Ontario Section
  • Wayne Brooks - Streestville Meadowvale Figure Skating Club, Central Ontario Section
  • Éric Bergeron - CPA Les Mazurkas, Quebec Section
  • Cynthia Benson - Saint John Skating Club, New Brunswick Section
  • Peter Mattatall -Tatamagouche Skating Club, Nova Scotia Section
  • June Easter - O'Leary Figure Skating Club, Prince Edward Island Section
  • Betty Brett - Mount Pearl Skating Club, Newfoundland/Labrador
