The top synchronized skating teams in Canada hit the ice in Chilliwack, B.C., for the 2008 BMO Skate Canada Synchronized Skating Championships

(February 26, 2008 - OTTAWA, ON) – The best synchronized skating teams in Canada will compete at the 2008 BMO Skate Canada Synchronized Figure Skating Championships. The event will take place Feb. 28 – March 2, 2008 at the Canlan Ice Sports Prospera Centre in Chilliwack, B.C. Over 1,200 of the best synchro skaters will descend on Chilliwack, 69 teams in total, to take part in the event. This year will mark the 25th Anniversary of the Skate Canada Synchronized Skating Championships.

The top competitive teams from across Canada will travel to Chilliwack to compete for national titles in the senior, junior, novice and adult categories. The top two senior teams will go on to represent Canada at the 2008 ISU World Synchronized Skating Championships in Budapest, Hungary, taking place March 28-30, 2008.

NEXXICE, who train out of the Burlington Skating Club and is affiliated with the Kitchener-Waterloo SC, won their first senior National Championship in 2007. The team, along with head coach Shelley Barnett, will be heading to Chilliwack to defend their national title. Les Suprêmes, who train out of the Club de Patinage Artistique St. Leonard and black ice, who train out of the Richmond Hill Figure Skating Club, also finished on the podium last year at the national championships. Les Suprêmes took home the silver medal, while black ice took home bronze. There is no doubt both teams will have their sights on gold. With all three teams having achieved international success this year, it is looking to be a tight race for national gold.

The 2008 BMO Skate Canada Synchronized Figure Skating Championships will also provide the opportunity for skaters in the Festival SynchroSkate Program a chance to compete at a national level competition. Festival teams will compete in the festival open, festival novice, festival junior and festival adult categories.
