Strong field announced for 2007 HomeSense Skate Canada International
(June 8, 2007 - Ottawa, ON) - Fans in Quebec City will be treated to strong competition in each of the four disciplines at the 2007 HomeSense Skate Canada International, which takes place Nov. 1 – 4 at the Colisée Pepsi.
The men’s competition promises to be an extremely exciting competition featuring three-time Canadian Champion and 2006 Olympic bronze medallist Jeff Buttle, as well as 2007 world champion Brian Joubert, of France, and Japan’s Nobunari Oda, who placed seventh at the 2007 world championships.
Canadian silver medallist Christopher Mabee will also represent Canada, as well as Vaughn Chipeur, who placed seventh at the 2007 BMO Canadian Championships.
The ladies event is also shaping up to be very exciting. The Canadian contingent consists of three-time Canadian Champion and 2006 HomeSense Skate Canada International Champion Joannie Rochette, Canadian bronze medallist Lesley Hawker and 2004 Canadian Champion Cynthia Phaneuf, who is ranked fourth in the senior women’s discipline in Canada.
The Canadians will be challenged by 2007 world silver medallist and International Skating Union (ISU) Grand Prix Final Champion Mao Asada, of Japan, and her teammate Yukari Nakano, who placed fifth at the 2007 world championships.
Canada will be well represented in the pair event in Quebec City. 2007 Canadian Champions Jessica Dubé and Bryce Davison, who were seventh at the 2007 world championships, will challenge for the podium. They will be joined by teammates Anabelle Langlois and Cody Hay, who were 10th at the 2007 world championships, and the new team of Meagan Duhamel and Craig Buntin.
Fans will also have the opportunity to see the German team of Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy, who won the bronze medal at the 2007 world championships.
Headlining the ice dance event are two-time world champions Albena Denkova and Maxim Staviski, of Bulgaria. Challenging Denkova and Staviski will be Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, the Canadian silver medallists who placed sixth in their world championships debut in March.
Making their ISU Grand Prix debut are Canadian bronze medallists Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje. Weaver and Poje were a new team last season and had an outstanding year, winning the bronze medal at the 2007 world junior championships and placing 20th in their world championships debut. Canadians Chantal Lefebvre and Arseniy Markov, ranked fifth in the senior ice dance discipline in Canada, will also compete in Quebec City.
