Junior Skaters Head to Sweden
(October 31, 2001 - Gloucester, ON) A team of 10 Canadian skaters will head to Malmö, Sweden this week to compete in the Salchow Trophy, the sixth scheduled ISU Junior Grand Prix event of the season. The competition will take place November 1-4, 2001.
In the Ladies event Canada will have four entries. Marie-Luc Jodoin, 16, from Mont St-Hilaire, Quebec will be competing in her second event of the season. She came seventh at the North American Challenge Skate in Chicago, in the Junior division. She trains in Trois-Rivières, Quebec with coaches Manon Perron and Nathalie Martin.
Also competing is Miyoko Ohtake, 16, from Toronto, Ontario. Training in Mississauga with coach Robert O'Toole, Ohtake will be competing in her first international event since her bronze medal at the 2001 Triglav Trophy.
Joining them is Three Hills, Alberta's Amanda Billings, 14, who will compete in her first Junior competition. She won a gold medal at the North American Challenge Skate in Vancouver, British Columbia this summer. Billings trains in Calgary, Alberta with coach Sharon Larivière.
Rounding out the Ladies event is Meagan Duhamel, 15. This Walden, Ontario native is currently training in Barrie, Ontario with coaches Lee Barkell and Ghislain Briand. She will be competing at her first Junior Grand Prix event. This summer she captured the silver medal at the North American Challenge Skate in Chicago.
In the Men's event Canada's entries include Sherbrooke, Quebec's Marc-André Craig, 19. Craig is coached by Josée Normand and Daniel Berger at 4 Glaces Brossard. In his Junior Grand Prix assignment last season at Blue Swords in Germany he finished eleventh.
Joining Craig is Kenny Rose, 15, from Newmarket, Ontario. This is Rose's first competition at the Junior level. Training in Richmond Hill, Ontario with coach Linda Bridge, Rose claimed the gold medal at the North American Challenge Skate in Ottawa, Ontario this summer.
Canada will also be sending two Dance teams. Repentigny, Quebec's Mylene Girard, 17, and Brian Innes, 21, from Embro, Ontario will be competing in their second international event of the season. At the North American Challenge Skate in Ottawa, Ontario the team with the gold medal in the Junior division. Girard and Innes train with David Islam and Kelly Johnson in Barrie, Ontario.
Joining them are Sabrina Granata, 15, and Bradley Yaeger, 16. The Embrun, Ontario and Orleans, Ontario natives have recently relocated to Windsor, Ontario in order to train with coach Marina Zoueva in Detroit. The duo claimed the silver medal at the North American Challenge Skate in Baltimore this summer.
Competitors at the ISU Junior Grand Prix Series compete for qualifying points to earn one of eight spots in each event at the ISU Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final, December 13-16, 2001 in Bled, Slovenia. Prize money totaling $22,500 US is awarded at each of the eight events, with $105,000 US up for grabs at the final.
The Canadian Officials at the event are Calgary, Alberta's Sheena Meurin and Jane Garden, from Toronto, Ontario. The Team Managers are Elaine Urton, from Calgary, Alberta and National Coach Consultant Petra Burka.
