Exciting year ahead for Emanuel Sandhu

(June 15, 2007)

Emanuel SandhuThis year is setting up to be an exciting one for Emanuel Sandhu.

The 26-year-old from Richmond Hill, Ont. has decided to sit out the 2007-2008 ISU Grand Prix season and will instead focus on his singing and acting career.

He recently co-wrote, co-produced and recorded his debut single Burn Up the Floor, which can be heard on his website at www.emanuelsandhu.com.

“I needed a break,” said Sandhu of his decision to take this season’s Grand Prix season off. “I’ve been competing on the Grand Prix circuit for over a decade, and I felt I needed to step away and have a break physically, emotionally, spiritually and mentally.”

The Canadian Champion in 2001, 2003 and 2004, Sandhu has competed in numerous world championships and finished as high as fifth in 2006. He is also a two-time Olympian, and won the gold medal at the ISU Grand Prix Final in 2003.

Sandhu would like to get into a recording studio in the near future and record possibly four or five more songs. In addition to his singing, Sandhu would also like to focus on a couple of acting projects he currently has on the go.

The reaction to Burn Up the Floor has been positive.

“From my standpoint, I’m really proud of how everything turned out,” said Sandhu. “The public feedback has been really encouraging.”

Despite the focus on his singing and acting career, Sandhu won’t be off the ice for long. After taking a break from the ice following the 2006-2007 season, Sandhu performed in various shows this past spring, and he hopes to do more shows and performances in the fall.

He has yet to make a decision as to whether he will compete in the 2008 BMO Canadian Championships in his hometown of Vancouver in January.

“It’s (deciding not to compete on the Grand Prix circuit) been a tough decision to make because I’ve been used to competing in the Grand Prix events, but I think it’s not only a good opportunity for myself, but also for the up-and-coming athletes who might not have had the opportunity to compete on the Grand Prix circuit otherwise,” said Sandhu.

“My main focus right now is my music,” added Sandhu. “It’s something I see as a creative challenge. We’ll see how it turns out.”
