(September 30, 2009) – Skate Canada official Jean Senft has been recognized by Sports Officials Canada as the first recipient of their newly created integrity award. This award was created to recognize and honour a technical official who by virtue of an act or decision has made a significant contribution to upholding the highest principles of the sports officiating profession or avocation. Sports Officials Canada presents this award at the discretion of its Board of Directors when appropriate, and is not an annual award.

Jean, from West Vancouver, British Columbia is an active official both domestically and internationally. Her qualifications include certification as an ISU judge for singles, pairs and ice dance, ISU referee for ice dance, and International referee for singles and pairs. Jean is also qualified as a Canadian level technical controller in singles and ice dance.

Benoît Lavoie, Skate Canada President, and himself an official with Olympic level experience stated the following in a letter to Jean, “Skate Canada relies greatly on the integrity of its officials. The legitimacy of results is paramount to the competitive experience of our athletes. It allows them to focus on competitive achievement, confident in the knowledge that the feedback they receive through assessment of their performance is accurate and properly represents their efforts”.

Jean has demonstrated these principles through her dedication as a volunteer official at all levels of events. She has been active as an official domestically for more than 30 years, including assignment to the Canadian Figure Skating Championships on numerous occasions, and has been qualified to officiate at the International level since 1985. As an international official Jean has been selected by Skate Canada to judge twice at the Olympic Winter Games, first at the 1994 games in Lillehammer, Norway, and then in 1998 in Nagano, Japan.
