(October 29, 2008) – Coaches of Canada, the national body representing the profession of coaching, released this year’s list of finalists for the prestigious Jack Donohue Coach of the Year Award and the Sheila Robertson Award for the organization that best supports and promotes its coaches. We are delighted to learn Skate Canada Coach Lee Barkell was selected as a finalist for the Jack Donohue Coach of the Year award! Furthermore, Skate Canada is a finalist for the Sheila Robertson Award.
Lee Barkell began coaching in 1990 after being a National Team member (1986 - 1990) and a former national and international champion. He is currently the Director of the Pairs Skating program at the Mariposa School of Skating in Barrie, Ont. With a Level 4 certification through the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP), he is one of few Canadian coaches to have both pairs and singles success in national and international competition. Barkell has coached over 75 national and international medalists; including 2008 World Champion Jeffrey Buttle. A dedicated member of the skating community, Barkell has coached athletes at eight World Championships, at the 2006 and 2002 Olympic Winter Games, and at 16 consecutive World Junior Championships. Barkell exudes sportsmanship, passion and dedication, instilling these elements to each of his athletes and throughout the skating community.
Skate Canada continues to support coaches at all levels throughout the sport and we are pleased to be recognized for our continued efforts with our coaches both internally and in the public eye. Skate Canada recognizes the vital role coaching plays in an athlete’s success and uses every channel possible to feature the hard work of our coaches through web stories and national awards. Skate Canada involves coaches on committees to contribute to the vision and success of the organization and we are honoured to be recognized as a leader in Canada.
