(March 3, 2009) – The 2009 BMO Skate Canada Synchronized Skating Championships came to a close on Sunday, March 1, 2009 at the General Motors Centre in Oshawa, Ontario. The four day event began on Thursday, February 26.
A total of 69 teams from both the competitive and festival disciplines hit the ice in Oshawa to vie for national titles. The eight category tournament produced eight Canadian Champions!
In the senior competitive division it was NEXXICE who walked away with the title. This is NEXXICE’s third consecutive national title. NEXXICE trains out of the Burlington SC under the guidance of coach Shelley Simonton Barnett. They will go on to represent Canada at the ISU World Synchronized Skating Championships in Zagreb, Croatia, April 3-4, 2009. Joining NEXXICE at Worlds by winning the silver medal will be black ice from the Upper Canada North York SC who are coached by Cathy Dalton. Les Suprêmes from CPA St. Leonard won the bronze medal. They are coached by Lyne Forget.
In the junior competitive discipline it was Nexxice junior from Burlington SC who claimed the Canadian title. Gold Ice from Skate Canada Brampton-Chinguacousy won silver and Les Suprêmes from CPA St. Leonard won the bronze medal.
In the novice competitive category it was a Quebec sweep of the podium. Les Pirouttes from CPA Laval won the gold medal followed by Nova from CPA Boucherville and Les Suprêmes from CPA St. Leonard winning the bronze.
In the adult competitive division Quebec team Nova from CPA Boucherville won gold while NEXXICE from the Burlington SC took home silver and Central Ontario’s Fusion from the YRSA Winter Club won bronze.
Over to the festival side of things! In adult it was Source from the Nepean FSC who won gold. They were followed by Mississauga Ice Precise from the Mississauga SC and Nova Spirit from CPA Boucherville.
Mystic Motion from Mississauga SC won the novice festival title. Ice Image from the Burlington SC won silver and Gold Ice from Skate Canada Brampton-Chinguacousy won bronze.
In junior festival Les Pirouttes from CPA Laval won gold. Ice E-Motion from the Mississauga SC won silver and Cassiopée from Sherbrooke CPA placed third.
In the festival open category Black Gold from Calgary Synchronized Skating Club was the only team from Western Canada to win gold. Ilderton Silver Jets from the Ilderton SC and Evolution from Charlesbourg CPA followed in second and third.
