Promising talent at the Skate Canada National Development Camp

Last weekend, 26 single skaters from across the country, with ages ranging from 11-18 met in Toronto, Ontario, for the Skate Canada National Development Camp. The camp focuses on the development of high performance athletes in Canada and each of the skaters were selected based on a combination of age and performance in the 2012-2013 season.

“This camp is so important to help develop talent and depth in Canadian figure skating. It’s an opportunity for us to see how they have progressed since the 2013 Canadian Tire National Figure Skating Championships, and to provide them with the skills to continue improving,” said Mike Slipchuk, Skate Canada High Performance Director.

Over the course of three days, a variety of different on-ice sessions were held. Skaters had the opportunity to learn from world champion ice dancer Shae-Lynn Bourne who held a stroking session, and renowned coaches Lee Barkell, Doug Leigh, Christy Krall, Brian Orser, Joanne McLeod and Manon Perron who all held technical sessions.

The athletes also took part in fitness testing at the Canadian Sport Centre Ontario while the coaches attended a session specifically focused on Dartfish technology and integrated sport team with Christy Krall and Patricia Chafe.

“This camp is really about equipping both the skaters and coaches with the tools needed to succeed. As we head into the 2014 Olympics this is the time to develop those younger athletes that are looking towards the 2018 and 2022 Olympic Games,” continued Slipchuk.

Though the camp was serious business the skaters still had a bit of time to hang out and get to know each other. Check out some of the photos below!
