OTTAWA, ON: Saint John, New Brunswick will host the 2013 Skate Canada International at the Harbour Station from October 25-27, 2013. This is the third time the city has staged this event; the previous two were in 1995 and 1999. The city also hosted the ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships® in December of 1997.
The event features many of the top figure skaters in the world in head-to-head competition in four disciplines, men, ladies, pair and ice dance.
“Skate Canada is pleased to bring a skating event of this level back to Saint John. Hosting an event of this calibre involves participation from many different areas and we are confident that Saint John will put on an outstanding event,” said Benoît Lavoie, Skate Canada President. “2013 is an exciting year to be hosting this ISU Grand Prix event. Spectators in Saint John will have the opportunity to see the programs that the skaters will use for the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia. Many competitors will debut them for the first time at the Harbour Station.”
“We are delighted to be selected as the host for the Skate Canada International and we look forward to welcoming the skaters, their families, and skating fans from around the world to Saint John, New Brunswick,” said Mayor Mel Norton. “We are very thankful for our many community volunteers and our skating community in their dedication, skill, and enthusiasm to help Saint John prepare for the Skate Canada International Grand Prix. We would especially like to thank our local Committee Chair Susan Taylor and her committee for their work with Skate Canada.”
Skate Canada International is the second competition in the annual ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating® series. The other events take place in the United States (Skate America), China (Cup of China), France (Trophée Eric Bompard), Russia (Rostelecom Cup) and Japan (NHK Trophy). Skaters are awarded points based on their placements in the series' events. The top-six men and ladies and the top-six pair and ice dance teams qualify for the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final to be held in Japan from December 5-8, 2013.
Competitors for the Skate Canada International, and all of the ISU Grand Prix events, will be announced following the ISU Grand Prix Commission meetings in June 2013.
Tickets are expected to be on sale in the Spring of 2013. Additional information will be posted on www.skatecanada.ca as soon as it is available.
