Leslie Hawker wins Canada's first medal at 2003 Winter Universiade

Leslie Hawker of Toronto won a bronze medal in women's figure skating at the World University Games in Italy on Sunday, January 19. This is Canada's first medal of the competition.

Japan's Shizuka Arajawa won the gold, while Angela Lyen of the United States took silver. Leah Hepner of Calgary was seventh and Nadine Gosselin of Pont Rouge, Que., was eighth.

In the Men's competition, Nicholas Young of Pembroke, Ont. finished fourth, Jean-François Bidal of Montreal, Que. was 12th and Chad Kilburn of Edmonton was 17th. The gold medal went to Russia's Alexei Vassilevsky, the silver to Russia's Anton Smirnov and the bronze to Japan's Kensuke Nakaniwa.
